Echo-Off ’06 – 11 Devices that let you sound good while repeating yourself – repeatedly by Bob Dragich
GUYATONE FLIP TD-X TUBE ECHO ($275)
The problem with most analog delay units is that the maximum delay time is just too short. Tokyo Sound gets around this problem by producing a pedal that is essentially digital with a parallel tube circuit that warms up the tone. The TD-X has the usual knobs – Level (output), Feedback (number of delays), and Delay Time. The maximum range of the delay time can be adjusted with a three-way switch for Short (under 80 mS), Medium (up to approximately 300 mS) and Long (2,600 mS) delays. However, it’s the two controls on the second row that really make this pedal. The Analog Simulation knob adds progressive distortion to the repeated signals, so that the degree to which the repeats break up can be easily dialed in. The Tape Simulation knob rolls off the treble and some of the lowest bass. Use of these two knobs allows the guitarist to tune in the exact amount of “warmth” desired at any time. The TD-X can go from digital clarity to sounding very much like a tape unit in need of a tune-up.
COOL: Real tubes, true-bypass, and a variety of warm sounds.
COOLER IF: The footswitch didn’t make a slight pop when depressed.
